What to Do Right Now

While you call us, here is what helps in the first few minutes. The right first step can save a tooth.

Knocked-Out Tooth

A knocked-out tooth is the most time-sensitive emergency there is. Your best chance of saving it is within the first hour, so call us on your way.

  • Pick the tooth up by the crown, the part you normally see, never by the root.
  • If it is dirty, rinse it gently with water. Do not scrub it or wipe it with cloth.
  • If you can, slip it back into its socket and bite down softly on a clean cloth.
  • If you cannot, keep it in a cup of milk, or tucked in your cheek. Do not let it dry out.

Broken or Cracked Tooth

A break can expose the nerve, which is why it hurts and why it needs quick attention.

  • Rinse your mouth gently with warm water.
  • Hold a cold compress to your cheek to bring down swelling.
  • Save any pieces of the tooth if you can, and bring them with you.
  • Do not chew on that side until we see you.

Chipped Tooth

A small chip feels minor, but the rough edge leaves the tooth open to decay and further breakage, so it is worth seeing us soon.

  • Rinse with warm water.
  • If there is a sharp edge, cover it with dental wax or sugar-free gum to protect your tongue and cheek.
  • Avoid biting down on that tooth until it is repaired.

When to Call an Emergency Dentist

Not every dental problem is an emergency, but some should never wait. Call us right away if you have:

  • Severe or sudden tooth pain Pain that keeps you up at night or gets worse fast often means an infection or an exposed nerve.
  • Swelling in the face or gums Swelling, especially with fever or a bad taste, can signal an abscess, which needs treatment quickly.
  • A lost filling or crown The exposed tooth is fragile and sensitive, and easy to damage further before it is repaired.
  • Bleeding that will not stop Ongoing bleeding after an injury or extraction needs to be looked at, not waited out.
  • A broken brace or poking wire A wire cutting into your cheek or lip is worth a quick visit to fix before it causes a sore.

Should You Go to the ER or an Urgent Care?

For a tooth problem, a dentist is almost always the right call, not a hospital emergency room or a walk-in urgent care. Most ERs and urgent care clinics are not set up to treat teeth. They can give you painkillers or antibiotics, but they cannot fix the tooth itself, so you end up at a dentist anyway, just later and after another wait.

The exception is trauma beyond the teeth: a possible broken jaw, deep cuts, or an injury with heavy bleeding that will not stop. If that is the case, go to the emergency room first. For the tooth, call us.
